"Do YouTube Ads Harm Your Channel's Growth?"

I can't tell you how many times I've heard this concern from people looking to run YouTube Ads. So what's the Truth? (It may surprise you)

Today, I'm going to dive in & reveal what about this is truth & what is myth.

The Myth: YouTube Ads Kill Organic Reach

First things first - this myth isn't completely baseless. There is a grain of truth to it, but it's been blown way out of proportion & misunderstood.

Here's the deal: YouTube's algorithm loves watch time. It's one of the key metrics that determines whether your videos (and your channel as a whole) get recommended to more viewers.

The fear is that if you run ads, and people only watch for a few seconds before skipping, it could tank your average watch time and hurt your organic reach.

And that is True.

Running an In-Stream ad can harm your organic reach because it could reduce your average watch time.

So now you're probably thinking "Aleric, then it sounds like you're confirming this" -- well not so fast...

The Truth: It's All About How You Run the Ad

If you run an In-Stream ad as a PUBLIC video then the watch time can count against your channel's average watch time & potentially harm your growth.

But that's why we always recommend to upload In-Stream ads as UNLISTED videos on YouTube.

Which YouTube says & we've seen will not affect your average watch time statistics.

The Key: Make sure your YouTube Ad Videos are Unlisted.

Unlisted videos don't count towards your channel's public watch time stats. So even if people skip them quickly, it won't drag down your average.

(If you're extra cautious, you can run your ads from a separate YouTube account, but that isn't necessary.)

But In-Stream Ads aren't the only type of YouTube Ads...

There are also "In-Feed" Ads which appear in Search Results & as Suggested Videos -- helping to get your videos in front of people as if they had discovered them on their own!

If its possible to harm your channel watch time with running the wrong kind of ad, then the equal & opposite must also be true -- you could help grow your channel if you could run an ad with a higher watch time.

And that's where running strategic In-Feed Ads to key videos on your channel can actually help you reach more ideal viewers with videos on your channel as if they had naturally discovered them. Just make sure to check your watch time stats to ensure the videos watch time is higher than your average.

Don't let fears hold you back from the massive potential of YouTube advertising.
