Principle #1: Authenticity is Your Video Superpower

One of the first questions I got at the launch was about confidence on camera - because most experts I talk to have some version of this fear.

And I'll be honest - I was right there with you.

When I first started filming YouTube Ads featuring myself, I was about 50 pounds heavier, self-conscious about how I looked, and I almost deleted the video that ended up generating over a Million Dollars for my business.

Here's the lesson: Being authentic is actually a superpower in video.

People are drawn to who you really are. Your audience doesn't want a polished, fake, "salesy" version of you - they want the real you, sharing real value. Your "nerdy," "quirky," "different" parts? Those are the things that make you magnetic on video.

3 things to remember:

  1. Authenticity attracts the RIGHT people - the clients who will love working with you

  2. You're already on video constantly - FaceTime, Zoom, Instagram. Channel that same casual energy

  3. You decide if you hit publish - You're in complete control. Record 1 time or 50, your audience will never know

Principle #2: The H.E.C. Formula (Hook, Educate, Call to Action)

This is the bedrock of every converting YouTube Ad I've ever made.

Most ads fail because they go straight from a bold claim to "buy my thing." There's no value delivered IN the ad itself - so there's no reason for the viewer to trust that the offer is valuable.

The H.E.C. Formula flips this on its head:

  • Hook - Capture your ideal client's attention in the first few seconds (and deter people who aren't a fit)

  • Educate - Deliver REAL value inside the ad. Teach something useful even if they never buy from you

  • Call to Action - Make it crystal clear what they should do next, with zero friction

Here's the secret sauce: Leave viewers feeling like they got value even if they never take action.

Counterintuitively, when you give before you ask, your ads convert better - not worse.

Principle #3: The Alpha-AI Targeting Strategy

Here's something that came up in the interview that I get fired up about every time.

When you use the default pre-built audiences on YouTube Ads (or any major ad platform), you're playing the same game as everyone else.

It's like two robots playing chess against each other - it's going to be a stalemate.

That's why I created what I call the Alpha-AI Targeting Strategy.

Instead of letting the algorithm do whatever it wants with default audiences, you take control & TRAIN the AI by building Custom Audiences based on:

  • What people are searching for on YouTube

  • What people are searching for on Google

  • Websites people have visited (URL affinity audiences)

  • In-market intent signals Google has on the user

This gives you an unfair advantage because you're not relying on the same pre-built buckets every other advertiser is using. You're pinpointing YOUR exact ideal client.

This is the difference between throwing money at the algorithm & actually guiding it toward the people most likely to convert.

Principle #4: The OmniPresent Retargeting Machine (Popcorn Kernel Strategy)

One of my favorite metaphors I shared at the launch:

Your leads are like popcorn kernels.

Some kernels pop right away - they see your ad, watch your video, take action, become a client. Done.

But the majority don't work that way. The majority of your audience needs to be warmed up over time before they're ready to take action.

That's where the OmniPresent Retargeting Machine comes in.

You take your leads (the popcorn kernels) and put them in the microwave (your retargeting machine), warming them up from every direction:

  • YouTube Ads

  • Facebook & Instagram Ads

  • LinkedIn Ads

  • Your organic YouTube content

  • Your email newsletter (like this one!)

The biggest underutilized asset in most businesses is your retargeting list - because it's invisible. But once you tap into it, you'll see kernels popping you didn't even know existed.

Principle #5: Viral Views vs Converting Clients

This is the entire point of Video Authority - and the reason I wrote the book.

There are PLENTY of books out there on how to go viral, how to build a YouTube channel, how to get views & likes.

But views ≠ revenue.

What's missing from the marketplace is a clear, principle-based playbook on how to actually convert viewers into clients.

The 3-part Venn Diagram I shared at the launch:

  1. What's Trending - What people are searching for & want to watch right now

  2. Your Expertise - The knowledge you uniquely have to share

  3. What Converts - The content that turns viewers into leads & leads into clients

When you hit all 3 - that's where the magic happens. That's a video that gets views AND builds your business.

In the age of AI, there's an interesting wrinkle here too - AI can teach the "what" and "why" of anything. But what AI can't replace is YOU & how YOU uniquely implement the "how" with your clients.

That's where your authority lives. That's what people actually invest in.

Bonus: My 5-Part Organic Video Script Framework

Quick bonus framework I shared at the end of the Q&A (which is in the book too).

For long-form organic YouTube videos (not ads), use this 5-Part Script Structure:

  1. Hook - Open with curiosity, a promise, or a problem

  2. Story - Share a quick story about how you discovered this, used it, or helped someone with it

  3. Educate - Break down the value & teach the principle

  4. Summary - Recap everything they just learned

  5. Call to Action - Direct them to the next step (lead magnet, video, call, etc.)

The hook + story combo is what separates videos that get clicked from videos that get watched all the way through. Don't skip the story.
