The Video I Almost Deleted That Made Me Over a Million Dollars

I shared this story on stage and I could see heads nodding all around the room - because SO many entrepreneurs have been in this exact same spot.

Years ago, I recorded a YouTube Ad for my business. I followed the framework. The content was solid. But when I watched it back - I hated how I looked. I was about 50 lbs heavier than I am today, my hair wasn't cooperating, and I was filming from my college dorm room.

I almost deleted it.

But I didn't. I published it anyway.

And that video became the first ad to generate over a million dollars in my business.

Here's the lesson - and this is HUGE:

Being authentic is actually a superpower in video.

I know that might sound cliche, but hear me out. Someone later told me that what drew them in was seeing "a nerdy guy that figured it out." And at one point, that would have bothered me. But I've learned to embrace it - because your uniqueness IS your authenticity, and it's what makes people trust you.

Here are the 3 Keys to Becoming an Authentic Authority on Video:

  1. Embrace Who You Are. Don't try to be somebody you're not. Your audience wants the REAL you - not some polished, fake version. The people who are meant to work with you will be drawn to exactly who you are.

  2. You're Already On Video All The Time. Think about it - you're on FaceTime, Zoom, video calls constantly. Just channel that same natural energy you'd have if you were on a FaceTime call with a friend. That's the version of you people want to see.

  3. You Have the Power to Decide When You Publish. Nobody needs to know if you recorded it once, three times, or ten times. You're in complete control. And that should give you a LOT of confidence.

These three mindset shifts alone can completely transform how you show up on camera - and I've seen it happen with thousands of our clients.

The H.E.C. Formula - Video Ads That Actually Convert

One of the biggest things I broke down at the launch event was the framework I've used across thousands of ads for my business & our clients to create video ads that don't just get views - they get clients.

We've all seen those ads that are like "Oh, you got a problem? Buy my thing." The cheesy, no-value pitch that you instantly tune out. We've been trained our entire lives to skip that kind of stuff.

So what actually works?

The Formula: Hook, Educate, Call to Action

Here's how each part works:

The Hook - This draws in your ideal client. It showcases your expertise & signals that you can solve the problem they have. You've got seconds to capture attention, so make them count with a bold claim, surprising stat, or thought-provoking question.

The Educate - This is where the magic happens & where most advertisers completely drop the ball. Instead of jumping straight into a pitch, you actually provide real, genuine value inside the ad itself. When you do this, you're building trust & helping people at the same time.

Here's our secret sauce: Leave people feeling like they got value even if they NEVER take action from your ad. Even if they never opt in, even if they never buy anything - the ad itself was worth watching.

I know that sounds counterintuitive, but it's SO true. When you lead with that level of value, your ads actually convert BETTER. It's a game-changer.

The Call to Action - Make it simple & clear for people to take the next step. Don't overcomplicate this. After you've delivered massive value, the CTA should feel like the natural, obvious next step.

Pro Tip: Focus on the WHAT & WHY - not the HOW. Share what the solution is & why it's important. The "how" is what they invest in when they become your client. Especially in the age of AI where so much information is out there, what AI can't replace is YOU and your business and the way you actually implement the solution.

The "Alpha AI" Targeting Strategy - Your Unfair Advantage

This is one of the most tactical pieces I shared at the event - and the room was leaning in for this one.

Here's the problem with most ad platforms: Everybody has access to the same pre-built audiences. It's like having two robots play chess against each other - it's going to be a stalemate.

A lot of people say "well then the targeting doesn't matter, it's just the creative." But don't throw out the targeting! There's an opportunity to get leverage on BOTH - and that's where the Alpha AI Strategy comes in.

Instead of using the same audiences everyone else has, you build a custom audience based on:

  • What people are searching for on YouTube & Google

  • Websites they've visited (URL affinity audiences)

  • In-market intent signals that Google has on what people are actively interested in

The reason I call it the Alpha AI Strategy is because these algorithms are built with AI to help you pinpoint your ideal audience. But the key is training the algorithm based on who YOUR ideal client is - not just letting it do whatever it wants.

And here's the beautiful part - it actually serves people too. We've all been on YouTube and gotten an ad and thought "I was ACTUALLY looking for this - thank you for saving me a Google search!" That's what happens when you target the right way.

Stop Chasing Virality - Start Chasing Conversions

This right here is one of the BIGGEST distinctions I make in Video Authority - and honestly, it's what makes this book different from everything else out there.

There are tons of books about going viral. Tons of books about building a YouTube channel. But there's a massive gap when it comes to books about how to actually turn video into real revenue, real clients, and real impact for your business.

Views & likes don't always convert into clients. You need to know how to create content that's actually designed to convert.

Here's the Conversion Video Formula I shared at the event - it's a 3-part Venn Diagram:

  1. What's Trending - What are people actively searching for & wanting to watch right now?

  2. Your Expertise - What is your unique zone of genius that you can speak to with authority?

  3. What Converts - What type of content will actually get people to take the next step & become a client?

When you hit all three of those - THAT is when you have a video that truly converts. If you hit two, you'll have a successful video in one area. But if you only have one, it probably won't see the results you want.

This framework alone has been a game-changer for so many of our clients - and it's one of the core principles inside the book.

The "Popcorn Kernel" Retargeting Machine

This is one of my favorite analogies from the book - and it got a BIG reaction from the audience at the launch event.

Think of all your leads like popcorn kernels. Some are going to pop quickly - they see your ad, go through your funnel, see the value, and become a client right away.

But the majority DON'T work like that.

And here's the thing - one of the BIGGEST underutilized assets in most businesses is your retargeting list. The reason it's underutilized? It's invisible. But there are SO many opportunities hiding in the people who have already visited your website or become a lead but haven't converted yet.

That's where the OmniPresent Retargeting Machine comes in.

You take all those popcorn kernels (your leads), put them into the microwave (the OmniPresent Retargeting Machine), and it warms them up from EVERY direction:

  • YouTube Ads retargeting them with more value

  • Facebook & Instagram Ads keeping you top of mind

  • LinkedIn Ads for the B2B angle

  • Your organic YouTube content continuing to nurture

  • Your email sequences warming them up

All of these start warming up those leads from every angle until they start popping - converting into clients. It's an absolute game-changer when you set this up properly.

BONUS: The Organic + Ads Flywheel

One of the questions from the audience that I LOVED was about when to run ads versus organic content. And my answer surprised a few people:

Do BOTH - because it creates a flywheel that goes faster and faster over time.

Here's how it works: You pull people in from ads. Some convert right away, but others get warmed up by your organic content. New people that discover you through organic content can then be retargeted with ads. The flywheel spins faster & faster.

But if you're just getting started & wondering which one to focus on first, here's my simple framework:

Which resource do you have more of right now - Time or Money?

  • More Time? Start with organic content - it rewards the amount of time you put in

  • More Money? Start with ads - you can accelerate results with investment

  • Have Both? Go all in on both right off the bat & watch the flywheel take off

And for content strategy, here's what I recommend:

  • Daily short form content across platforms (great for pulling in NEW eyeballs at scale)

  • Weekly long-form videos (the best of both worlds - nurtures existing audience AND attracts new people)

  • Consistent live video on some rhythm (best for connecting deeper with your existing audience)
