The Biggest Change in YouTube Ads History

Google just announced one of the most significant changes ever to hit the YouTube Ads platform - they're shifting all Video Action Campaigns (VAC) to what they're calling "Demand Gen Campaigns."

And here's the kicker: This isn't optional.

According to Google, by March 2025, you won't be able to create new VAC campaigns, and in Q2 2025, Google will automatically migrate all existing Video Action Campaigns to Demand Gen campaigns.

(It’s worth noting Google often pushes back their rollouts, that said it would be wise to prepare for this timeline)

What Are Demand Gen Campaigns?

Think of Demand Gen campaigns as a "video & image campaign" that combines multiple ad formats into one campaign.

Combining classic YouTube Ads with YouTube Short Ads, In-Feed Video Ads, Image Ads on GMail & in-feed on YouTube.

Here’s some more details:

  1. New Ad Placements (Video + Image)

    • Classic YouTube in-stream ads

    • YouTube Shorts ads

    • Strategic image ads (appearing in Gmail & Discover feed)

    • All managed in one campaign

  2. Enhanced User Journey: Your prospects might see…

    • In-stream ad while watching YouTube

    • Then a Shorts ad while scrolling

    • Followed by an image ad in Gmail
