What Are "Rich Relationships" and Why They Matter

Before we dive into the framework, let me share what Selena means by "Rich Relationships" - because this isn't your typical networking advice.

According to Selena, a rich relationship has three core characteristics:

1. Energy Abundance - It feels expansive to be in this relationship. You don't feel drained; you feel energized!

2. Goal Acceleration - These are people who genuinely want to help you reach your goals and dreams faster. They care about you winning!

3. Inspiration Factor - Rich relationships are with people who inspire you. You feel safe, valued, and important to them.

Think about that for a second - how many of your current relationships check all three boxes? 🤔

The 6 Circles of Connection Framework

This is where things get really interesting! Selena shared her favorite framework that completely changed how I think about managing relationships.

Every single person in your life falls into one of these six circles:

Circle 1: Your Innermost Circle (1-3 people) These are the people you're "doing life with." They see your ups and downs, they're your witnesses, and you are a genuine priority to them. This could be a supportive life partner, longtime best friend, or even a therapist you've worked with for years.

Circle 2: Treasured Connections (6-12 people) Your very best friends, trusted team members you work with daily, incredible colleagues, and top referral partners who always have your back. You're in active, regular contact with these people.

Circle 3: Broader Active Network (~100 people) Here's where it gets tactical! These people must meet the "3 R's":

• Respected - You hold them in high regard

• Referable - You'd confidently put them in front of your closest friends and clients

• Responsive - They're part of your active network and will respond when you reach out

Circle 4: Distant Connections These could be amazing people you've only met once or twice, OR people you've known for years but there's some misalignment. Maybe they don't follow through, or you're just too maxed out to deepen the relationship right now.

Circle 5: Disconnected Relationships When someone has crossed a line or betrayed trust. You might wish them well, but you keep healthy boundaries because close relationship isn't good for you.

Circle 6: Everyone Else The rest of the world - simple as that!

How to Actually BUILD Rich Relationships

Now here's where the rubber meets the road - Selena shared her exact approach for building these game-changing relationships:

Start with Yourself The number one insight? Rich relationships start with the relationship you have with yourself. You have to feel worthy of rich relationships and believe you're not bothering people.

Lead with Generosity When Selena was just starting out with no clients or following, she confidently built relationships with hugely influential people. How? She focused on GIVING rather than taking.

"The act of giving is the reward," she told me. People can feel when something is transactional versus when someone genuinely has your back.

Use Technology Wisely Here's something interesting - Selena uses AI tools like WhisperFlow and ChatGPT to help with communications, BUT she never loses the human touch. She warned against making people feel like they're being managed by an assistant or automation.

Pro tip: She has a VIP Relationship Manager who helps nurture her top relationships, but Selena stays involved by reviewing call recordings and adding personal touches.

I recently experienced Selena's relationship-building magic firsthand at a dinner party she hosted in Austin.

1. Map Your Circles - Take 15 minutes and categorize your current relationships into the 6 circles. Be honest about where people really belong.

2. Identify Your Circle 3 Gaps - Look at your broader active network. Who's missing? What types of relationships would accelerate your goals?

3. Lead with Value - Pick 3 people from your Circle 2 or 3 and reach out with something valuable - no ask, just give!
