If you've been following the AI space at all, you probably heard the MASSIVE news that dropped last week.

OpenAI officially announced their approach to advertising in ChatGPT.

And let me tell you - this isn't just another platform adding ads. This is a fundamental shift in how we'll reach customers in the age of AI.

I've spent the last few days diving deep into their announcement, and I want to break down exactly what this means for you and your business.

As a Reminder, Our Goal with this Newsletter is to Give You the Highest Level of Value Possible. That's my Promise to you & I intend to Over-Deliver!

Alright, Let's dive in.

The Big Picture: What's Actually Happening

OpenAI is rolling out ads to ChatGPT's free tier and ChatGPT Go ($8/month) users in the United States first.

OpenAI's 5 Core Principles for Advertising

OpenAI didn't just announce ads - they laid out a complete framework for HOW they're approaching this. And honestly? It's different from anything we've seen before.

Here are the 5 principles they're building on:

1. Mission Alignment

Their exact words: "Our mission is to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity; our pursuit of advertising is always in support of that mission and making AI more accessible."

Translation? They're positioning ads as a way to keep ChatGPT free and accessible to everyone - not just as a cash grab.

2. Answer Independence

This is HUGE.

"Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what's most helpful to you. Ads are always separate and clearly labeled."

Unlike Google, where the line between ads and organic results has gotten blurry over the years, OpenAI is drawing a hard line. The AI's responses stay pure - ads are completely separate.

3. Conversation Privacy

"We keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers."

In an age where everyone's worried about data privacy, this is a bold commitment. Your conversations stay between you and ChatGPT.

4. Choice and Control

"You control how your data is used. You can turn off personalization, and you can clear the data used for ads at any time. We'll always offer a way to not see ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that's ad-free."

They're giving users complete control. Don't want personalized ads? Turn it off. Don't want any ads? Pay for a subscription. Simple.

5. Long-Term Value

Here's the one that really caught my attention:

"We do not optimize for time spent in ChatGPT. We prioritize user trust and user experience over revenue."

Read that again.

They're explicitly saying they WON'T do what social media platforms do - trying to keep you scrolling and engaged just to show you more ads. User trust comes first.

Why This Matters for Marketers Like Us

Here's what I want you to understand about this opportunity...

When someone is using ChatGPT, they're in a completely different mindset than when they're scrolling Instagram or watching YouTube.

They're actively problem-solving.

They're researching solutions.

They're making decisions.

This is intent-based advertising at a level we've never seen before.

Think about it - instead of targeting someone based on demographics or interests and HOPING they're in the market for your solution... you're showing up when they're literally asking questions about the exact problem you solve.

That's not interruption marketing. That's conversation-based marketing.

And OpenAI specifically said something that should make every small business owner pay attention:

"Ads can be transformative for small businesses and emerging brands trying to compete. AI tools level the playing field even further, allowing anyone to create high-quality experiences that help people discover options they might never have found otherwise."

They're building this for businesses like ours - not just Fortune 500 companies with massive budgets.

Help us make better ads

Did you recently see an ad for beehiiv in a newsletter? We’re running a short brand lift survey to understand what’s actually breaking through (and what’s not).

It takes about 20 seconds, the questions are super easy, and your feedback directly helps us improve how we show up in the newsletters you read and love.

If you’ve got a few moments, we’d really appreciate your insight.

The Early Adopter Playbook

I've been in the advertising game for over 16 years now. I got into YouTube ads back in 2015 when everyone said it wouldn't work.

"Nobody watches those ads."

"The skip button ruins everything."

"It's too expensive."

Fast forward to today - I've helped generate over $300 million for clients through YouTube advertising.

Here's the pattern I've seen with EVERY major ad platform:

Phase 1: Platform launches ads, costs are low, most people ignore it or are skeptical

Phase 2: Early adopters prove it works, more advertisers join, costs start rising

Phase 3: Platform matures, competition is fierce, the gold rush is over

With ChatGPT ads, we're at the very beginning of Phase 1.

The advertisers who figure this out NOW - while everyone else is still skeptical - are going to have a massive advantage.

We're witnessing the birth of what could become one of the most powerful advertising platforms in history.

700 million weekly active users. Intent-based targeting. Conversation-driven engagement.

The question isn't IF this will be big.

The question is: Will you be ready when it happens?

I plan to be one of the first in line.

And I want to bring you along for the ride.
